Additional Content: Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) is used for the chemical analysis of polymer surfaces and films. A pulsed ion beam is used to produce molecular fragments, and the ionic fraction of these fragments are sent to a time-of-flight detector to determine their mass-to-charge ratio. Data are summarized as mass spectra or two-dimensional images. When paired with a sputter ion beam for etching, ToF-SIMS can produce depth profiles or three dimensional images.
